LAY PASTORS
In John 10:14, Jesus says “ I am the Good Shepherd: I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” It is clear that Jesus was not advocating caring for sheep by committee. Jesus loved the word “shepherd.” At Wesley Memorial, we are many flocks that need leadership and care by more than your ordained shepherds. I Peter offers powerful imagery of the work of shepherds in the life of church. Thus, churches everywhere have sensed this Biblical call upon our lives to let God raise up Lay Pastors.
Any person who leads a ministry can be a Lay Pastor
Any person who is a member of our church and called by God can be a Lay Pastor
Lay Pastors are NOT chosen by the church or by the ordained pastors of the church, but they are called by God
A person who feels called by God meets with ordained pastors of the church, shares calling of God, and invited to be a Lay Pastor
THERE ARE FOUR BASIC REQUIREMENTS TO BE A LAY PASTOR
1. Lay Pastors must be spiritually focused – must pray daily for the church, and especially for those whom the Lay Pastor is responsible
2. Each Lay Pastor leads a ministry group in this church. All meetings will be conducted as a small group ( unity group ) with the emphases upon study, fellowship, prayer, accountability, and outreach.
3. Lay Pastors are required to have 12 weeks of training in pastoral counseling, theology, and Biblical studies. At the end of their training, there will be a commissioning service (s) for all who have completed course of study.
4. Lay Pastors also must have a brief spiritual gifts discovery inventory and unity group facilitator training, of which both will be part of the training.
